What is laser fungal treatment?

Laser therapy for nail fungus is a modern, painless treatment for resolving onychomycosis – a fungal infection of the fingernails and toenails. At Cosmo Derm clinic in Novi Sad, we use high-intensity medical lasers that selectively destroy the fungus without damaging the surrounding tissue.

The laser beam penetrates through the nail plate and acts directly on the source of the infection – making this method particularly suitable for persistent or chronic cases.

What does the treatment look like?

The treatment is non-invasive and lasts 15–30 minutes per nail. The laser is directed precisely at the infected nail and surrounding tissue, without the need for incisions or anesthesia. Before the procedure, the nail is cleaned and, if necessary, trimmed. On average, 3 to 4 treatments are needed, spaced 2–4 weeks apart.

Depending on the stage of the infection, the treatment can be combined with topical or oral antifungal medications. After therapy, it is important to follow preventive measures: keeping feet dry and clean, wearing breathable shoes, and avoiding closed, humid environments.

When is the treatment most effective?

Laser therapy provides the best results in the early stages of infection, when the fungus has not yet affected the entire nail plate. For more severe, long-standing infections, more sessions may be needed, sometimes in combination with other treatments. Regular foot hygiene and wearing appropriate footwear significantly increase the long-term success of the therapy.
